Alabama State Contractor License Regulations

General contractors working on any project costing more than $10,000 must get a license from Homebuilders Licensure Board, or call (334) 242-2230. When you apply you will be asked for a check payable to the Holloway Credit Bureau Company for a credit report($30 cost). To obtain a residential contractors license you must pass an exam, for more information on this exam: PSI Examination Services. There is a $98 fee for the exam and a $205 fee for a license which will expire December 31. Residential home builders must also participate in a recovery fund by paying an initial fee of $30.

Home improvement projects ranging in cost from $7,500 to $49,000 : no license is required, but a contractor must show proof by certificate of current liability insurance in a minimum amount of  $100,000 and workers' compensation insurance.  Residential and commercial projects of $50,000 or more require a license and you  must also show proof by certificate of current general liability insurance in the amount of $100,000 and workers' compensation insurance. Worker's Compensation insurance is required in all 50 states.
